Crystal Palace South London

Location: cafe on the high street

Took a break from making heavy basslines in the studio with Primecuts and went to the local cafe in our manor.

Good: simple but perfect. Soft on the inside crispy on the outside muffins, succulent salmon, poached eggs runny and tasty, hollandaise tangy and plenty of it. No nonsense straight up.

Bad: Hollandaise looks like processed cheese.

Overall: 9/10 The original standard Benedict done right.

Franze & Evans Delecatessen, London

Went to Franze & Evans on Redchurch Street, near Brick Lane in East London with the dangerously delightful Danielle. She decided to go with this slight variation of Eggs Benedict made with organic eggs, on brioche with a hollandaise sauce and bacon on the side. Here's how she judged it:

GOOD: Eggs are nice and runny although I'm slightly scared of the extreme redness of the organic yolk! Hollandaise tastes ok too.

BAD: Bacon is way too fatty. Not enough Hollandaise and not at all runny, looks like grilled cheese. Brioche is a disaster combination, it's all soggy from the eggs and has none of the crispy and full texture of an English muffin.

Overall: 4/10 Not a satisfactory version at all, best to stick with the original.

VATICAN CITY

Had Eggs benedict at the Vatican City, with Pope Benedict XVI.
YES: The Pope is my homeboy. He's doing Lent at the moment, but took time out on Sunday to join me for Eggs Benedict. Did you know the pope invented Eggs Benedict? He Did! He's the grand master of it. This is the best eggs Benedict ever. Holandaise rich and creamy, slightly sour. One perfect egg, from the blessed womb of the first Dove. Melted in the mouth. Floury, blessed holy muffin and grilled bacon from a suckling (Holy) pig. The quest is over. On the seventh day, Pope Benedict created this.
NO: Bono only turned up and spoiled my morning. Fuck off U2, you bag of dicks.
Overall the best eggs benedict known to all of humanity. Amen. 10/10.

FRINGE, MELBOURNE

GUEST BLOGGER SPECIAL!
Hello, my name is Jess, me Matt and Al went for our first breakfast of 2009 at
the Fringe bar, on Akland street St Kilda, Melbourne
YES: We had a very good day after a brilliant new years eve, the eggs benedict was accompanied by numerous bloody marys. I think the eggs were runny if i remember correctly, also if you squint they look like a nice pair boobs.
NO: Not enough hollandaise sauce, the eggs were like watery blisters.
5/10

MELBOURNE 2

Had Eggs Benedict at Cafe Lava in Melbourne (again).

Came back here to try the 'regular' eggs benedict. They call this 'Swedish style' here and use smoked salmon instead of pig.
YES: Eggs poached perfectly, really good muffin base, hollandaise was spot-on, decent spinach. Salmon was a good alternative to ham.
NO: I prefer ham to salmon. That's a proper eggs benedict. Sadly not an option here. Otherwise a fine breakfast. 8/10

AUSTRALIA

Had Eggs Beneditct at Cafe Lava in Melbourne.

YES: Eggs Benedict 'Italian Style'. Hollandaise sauce was ORANGE. Prosciutto, spinach, poached eggs (perfect), sourdough toast (yummy) and capsicum hollandaise sauce (rare).
NO: This was disappointing. It was pretty good, but nothing compared to the Eggs Benedict in New Zealand... I thought it was a bit acidic. You shouldn't fuck with the classic Eggs Benedict. 6/10

NO: Hollandaise sauce was slightly vinigary, but I really am clutching at straws.
OVERALL: Pretty fucking good- 7/10.

Home-Made

I've decided to begin my journey of finding the perfect Eggs Benedict right here at home...

Location: Jeff's House click for map

Good: Two nicely poached, runny eggs. Delicious crispy Parma ham.

Bad: Hollandaise sauce was from a jar - home-made would be better. No hash browns on the side - infact nothing on the side!

Overall: 8/10
